Yay! Legends Every Day brings the realms of George R. R. Martin to life.

By Daniel Barron

It used to be that the fantasy genre was a refuge in which a reader could escape and project their most ideal selves. However shackled you felt by your circumstances, your otherworldly avatar could venture forth on epic adventures towards eventual glory. Who wouldn’t want to save a kingdom and marry up or spend the rest of their days getting drunk and eating shit in The Shire? Then came George R. R. Martin, a screenwriting veteran who appropriated the comfy tropes of swords and sorcery for evil. Think those old Grimm’s fairy tale stories were cruel? Well Martin would have gleefully ended “Hansel & Gretel” with the witch devouring some rare child steaks. Nothing is too off-recipe or out-of-bounds for the author, whose popular Game of Thrones series seems to derive perverse pleasure from visiting horrors on characters audiences love. He may never even finish the damn books, how would you like that?! Nevertheless, audiences breathed a collective sigh of relief earlier this year when the latest season seemed to signal a more optimistic direction for the story. But let’s be honest, there can be no true despair without hope. Hope you’re ready for your heart to become a pin cushion, because it’s quilting season, bitch.

Yay! Legends Every Day concludes the fantasy portion of its Original Art Series with this presentation of Game of Thrones-inspired art that truly breaks the wheel. Share or pay the iron price.

‘Helm of the Hound’ (‘Helm of the Hound’ Battle Variant)
Medium: inks and digital
Size: 5×7″

“When the opportunity came up to be able to choose one particular house from the show I jumped at the chance to do House Clegane and focus on The Hound. His helm was one of my favorite visuals right from the first episode and I knew it would be the focus of my piece. Just like most characters on the show he was never solidly on a good or bad side and in my opinion knew how this world worked and what it took to live in it, making him one of my favorite characters through the series. So using this viewpoint I made two versions of his helm, a standard one that everyone saw and one that showcased aspects about Sandor Clegane himself.”

Medium: pastel and colored pencil on Strathmore artist paper

Size: 11×14″

“I’ve been a big fan of Game of Thrones since it started, and also a big fan of the Stark family. Over the years, I have illustrated several fan art pieces of favorite series characters and this was a wonderful opportunity for me to draw someone I haven’t before, Sansa. We have watched her character go through so much over the years and yet she still stands strong and I hope that she can make it until the end. Sansa has had so many different fashion styles on the show. I illustrated a look she had while she was captive of the Lannisters.”
