Spotlight on pop artist Vakseen in advance of his solo show “A Beautiful Lie” at the Exchange Unlimited Gallery.

By Daniel Barron

On Friday, June 13th, the Exchange Unlimited Gallery at UCLA will launch their first curated exhibition, and they hope to make a grand entrance with a vivacious night of art and music. Kicking off the space as their debut featured artist is Los Angeles-based talent and music industry veteran Otha Davis III, aka Vakseen. Vibrating, in the artist’s own words, with “feminine energy,” Vakseen’s pop style bears an instantly recognizable artistic stamp that fuses elements of photorealism, collage, cubism, as well as fashion design. They address notions of female identity, superficiality, and society’s deification of beauty. And by incorporating these perspectives, he seeks to produce an indictment of Instagram selfie culture and the obsession with medical enhancements in the name of physical perfection.

While motivated by an adoration of the opposite sex, Vakseen’s investment in these thematic elements also has foundations in personal insecurities. “I grew up overweight, so I wasnt always the most confident,” he writes in his artist statement. “It wasnt until I was much older that I was able to love myself, and express the inner voice that my childhood circumstances wouldnt allow.”

Desirability, he reasons, should not be dictated by commercials or magazine covers or billboards. “I simply do not appreciate beauty being defined for me, or anyone else. One of the wonderful things about the human experience is that we are free to explore, discover and evolve our perception of the multifaceted aesthetic this world has to offer.”

Whatever inner beauty must be celebrated, it’s safe to say that the art world has recognized the visual appeal of Vakseen’s work. His vibrant acrylics have been sold internationally and showcased in over forty solo and group exhibitions. But as many creatives would agree, “perfection” is an ideal few can ever actually achieve.

The Exchange Unlimited Gallery’s big opening night will also feature knockout performances the rising Neo-Soul star Lydia Rene and an eclectic DJ set by Santana from TruthSeekers Radio.
