What happens when three kiwis with a love of ’60s rock migrate to Los Angeles? The result of that chemical reaction occurred in late 2014, when guitarist/vocalist Cassie Gaffaney joined with bassist Geoff Maddock and drummer Nick Gaffaney to form the surf rock-infused group Santa Barbara. Their debut, self-titled EP dropped in March of last year, and now they’re back with the hammering head-bobber, “Reptile Lover.”

Below is the recently-dropped music video for the track, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at how it came together. Cassie was kind enough to spare a few words about the release, which you can purchase off their Bandcamp page here.

On what inspired the song:
“Reptile Lover” started out as a poem written by my dear friend, Jeffrey Holgate. He is a very talented artist and poet and we also happen to work together. He introduced me to LA band, Dengue Fever, and I became obsessed with their psychedelic surf/rock. Their vibe was a massive inspiration for how I wanted this song to sound.

On the music video:
This is our second video with Director Chris Miyasaki and Cinematographer Anthony Ignacio. We wanted to try something very different from the first video we did. Our first video “The Girl in Black,” was slow, dark and moody, but we wanted this one to be more fast-paced and high-energy. It’s actually filmed in the exact same location. Both music videos are shot in my friend Dave Hogan’s basement in Burbank! The guys did such a great job, we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.

On the meaning of the phrase “Reptile Lover”:
To me, a Reptile Lover is someone who is willing to do anything it takes to get what they want from this world. Regardless of how degrading or immoral it is. It’s a very deep obsession that they’ll stop at nothing for. It’s pretty tragic, really.
