Artist Spotlight on Ventura-based pop illustrator Ryan Genovese.

By Daniel Barron

Salvation had a name, and it was Saturday morning. School was out, the Pop-Tarts were in, and life lessons were saved until the END of the show (Because “knowing is half the battle,” after all.) It didn’t matter if it was reruns or stories fresh-out-the box, Saturday was a frontier without horizon, where a giant robot could become a car, a science nerd could become a spandex-wearing superhero, and a pink-shirted prince could become the most straight, masculine warrior the world had ever seen. It was a time where every toy line had a cartoon and every cartoon had a theme song. You know the words. Damn right you still know the words.

Ryan Genovese does. How could he forget? He also remembers all of the epic splash page throwdowns, the sick skate decks, the bitter arcade battles to the death. Today the Ventura-based pop illustrator mashes those influences together like his mind is a toy T-Rex and the page is a juicy stegosaurus. For Genovese, creativity is just heredity. He is the son of an architect and an art teacher and is now the husband of a fellow illustrator and comic book artist. Time will tell if the mantle will extend to the next generation, but the arts are like an old game cartridge to be passed down, one whose play style will remain timeless. Sometimes it helps to blow on the inside to make it work. But you already knew that.

For Yay! LA‘s Yay! Horror Movie A Day project Genovese interpreted The Terminator and the anime film Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. For Yay! Legends Every Day he illustrated the Guardians of the Galaxy.
