Artist Spotlight on the heavy metal illustrations of Orange County-based Ryan Bartlett.

By Daniel Barron

Working in the mediums of charcoal and pastel, Orange County-based illustrator has a thickly-rendered hard rawk style that brings to mind heavy metal iconography and the covers of pulp horror comics.

Of his biggest influences Bartlett writes:
“My earliest memories of taking great interest in specific art pieces are of Kelley Jones’ Batman covers from the early-to-mid 90s. To this day I love the style and mood in those illustrations. A few years later I acquired the original three Star Wars The Art of books and was subsequently supplied with a lifetime supply of wonder and imagination courtesy of Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston. Those are still some of my most frequent go-to books. I’m surprised the bindings have held after all these years. Finally, the step that made me decide that creating art was what I was going to do with my life was when my high school art teacher introduced me to the work of Brom and Frank Frazetta. It was all over. I spent the better part of that semester studying their work, and I haven’t stopped since.”

Over the last few years, Bartlett has split time between gallery shows and illustration work, primarily in the realm of heavy metal album covers, gig posters, and t-shirt designs. For Yay! LA‘s Yay! Horror Movie A Day project Bartlett interpreted The X-Files, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, and Friday the 13th, Part VI: Jason Lives. For Yay! Legends Every Day he chose Halo: Combat Evolved and Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.
