Artists Get Their Feet Wet with #MerMay

Artists go undah dah sea with their visual takes on aquatic nymphs.

by Daniel Barron

Throughout global folklore, there often exists a form of the legendary aquatic creatures popularly known as mermaids. Sometimes they are believed to be symbols of portent, signaling floods, storms, or shipwrecks. In other interpretations, they are benevolent nymphs that exist to woo and enchant us. Christopher Columbus even has accounts of mermaid sightings, though it is thought that they were just manatees. Why the fuck do we have a day celebrating him, again?

Whether in Greece or China or Africa or India, these concepts of advanced undersea life stimulate creatives to deep dive into their imaginations. Case in point: Many of the pieces in the following gallery were illustrated as part of the popular annual #MerMay sketch challenge, yet each of them comes from an artist involved in our Yay! Horror Movie A Day and Yay! Legends Every Day original art series.

Take a look. Let them be part of your world. (And now I will walk into the sea.)
