Artist Spotlight on Ukraine-born, Virginia-based painter Julia Gabrielov.

By Daniel Barron

Julia Gabrielov was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine and moved to the United States ate age two. Growing up in Brooklyn with her parents and grandparents, Gabrielov’s affinity for art made itself known at an early age. While she would eventually take art classes, she has largely educated herself through dedicated practice and an enduring desire to explore new mediums. She has become strongly influenced by the fashion and costume industries after being a model and cosplayer for almost ten years. Gabrielov often produces custom clothing and styling for her own photoshoots.

In 2010 Gabrielov’s evolved into full-time children’s book illustrator. Her works include the Under The Tree books and the ongoing Franklin Bean series. Some of her own stories such as include Dragon on the Moon.

The now internationally-exhibited Gabrielov further expanded her network when she became a member of the art collective Copycat Violence in 2014.

From her Artist Statement:

“Story telling is a passion that resonates within everything I do. Whether it is realism, animation, or garment making, I desire to share a fantasy world with my audience. That is why I love painting series.”

For Yay! LA‘s Yay! Legends Every Day project she interpreted Sailor Moon.
