Artist Spotlight on LA-based illustrator Aimee Kuester.

By Daniel Barron

For Aimee Kuester, art is family tradition. Her mother, who passed in 2001, was a skilled painter and draftswoman. Her father, Robert, is an internationally-renowned landscape artist (View his works here.). While she never received lessons from either parent, the creative environment they cultivated was instrumental in directing her course.
“I had so much time as an only child that I joined them creating day and night in my own studio in the back of the house. I was a misfit in grade school and middle school, an art dork who only had her sketchbook and imagination to keep a smile on her face,” she writes.
Life for Kuester began to look up in high school, as her maturing talents attracted a circle of friends and fans. Her prospects further improved when she showed in Santa Fe’s popular Water Street Gallery and began selling animal paintings faster than she could produce. She later moved to California to pursue her passion for art full-time and connect with its thriving community.
With her penchant for wildlife, she identifies natural history museums, zoos, and exotic animal sanctuaries as her biggest inspirations. Kuester was an instructor behind the drawing class “The Raw in Drawing,” with plans to open further classes in the future. After becoming a veteran of the design industry (including creating costumes for Katy Perry), she is currently pursuing a new body of personal work. She is available for custom commissions, including portraits, album covers, and her favorite subject, animal illustrations.

For Yay! LA‘s Yay! Horror Movie A Day project she illustrated AMC’s The Walking Dead and the 1992 film Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
